THE 70:20:10 RULE |
LET’S BREAK THAT DOWN.
70% of your attention is going to go toward things you are familiar with in your business. These are things you know like the back of your hand. 20% is where you are trying to push your boundaries. You may not be familiar with it but you know enough to get going. The last 10% of the rule is the true unknown and this is where you really start experimenting with things. It’s the projects and goals you don’t know if you will achieve at but are willing to give it a try.
Avinash Kaushik is the co-Founder of Market Motive Inc and the Digital Marketing Evangelist for Google. He explains the 70-20-10 rule like this:
“Trying to figure out how to do uncomfortable things that we’re going to fail at more than we will succeed at. But with every success you build a competitive advantage. A lot of marketers worry about data as being the death of creativity. But I see data as allowing you to unleash even more creativity than in the past.”
The rule is a simple device which helps decide how we prioritize our companies time and budget that will be put into different marketing activities.
Another way to look at it is:
70% – safe standard content that appeals to a large audience20% – moderately risky but will appeal to a possible new or small audience10% – hard, complicated and risky
There will be many interpretations on how your businesses can use the rule in your marketing strategies including content, social media marketing, google ads and much more.
TIP: Take time to draw out a map OR pie chart to see what your 70/20/10’s are and utilize that to strategize your marketing going FORWARD!
